Thoughts from Prof. Standa on Masters in Educational Practice for Academics (MEPA)

Professor Standa speaking during the launch

The Annual Academic Staff Workshop was held in June. During the morning session staff were challenged by a presentation from Mr. Ian Wairua on the use of Technology in Teaching, based on a paper he had recently presented at a conference in South Africa. Mr. Patrick Shabaya outlined the basis of Strathmore University’s Strategic Plan which is currently being reviewed. The session gave rise to an interesting debate on various matters of interest to the University community. Finally Mr. Stephen Nganga facilitated the viewing of a video, Inspired to Love, about the spirit of St Josemaria Escriva who effectively inspired the founders of Strathmore University.

The highlight of the afternoon was the launch of the new programme in Educational Practice for Academics which is being run by School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) in conjunction with Learning and Teaching Services (LTS). The programme was presented by Professor C. Gichure, Dean of SHSS. The occasion was graced by two guests. Professor E. Aseka, VC of the International Leadership University, gave the Academic Address. Professor Everett M.Standa, Former Chairman of the Commission of Higher Education was the guest of honour. In his speech Professor Standa shared his experiences about running a professional development programme for academic staff during his time at Kenyatta University. He highlighted the importance of linking theory with practice in the teaching and learning process and applauded Strathmore University for having developed the postgraduate programme in Educational Practice for Academics.
